Let’s start by exploring the realm of digital clutter. It’s the jumble that occurs when your files, data, and digital devices fall into disarray. Interestingly, did you know that over 56% of digital users have experienced data loss on their smartphones or computers due to digital clutter? The chaos can trigger stress, anxiety, and even a sense of despondency. Just like a slightly messy house can make me feel anxious, disorganization in my phone gets to me too.

Cleaning up the digital clutter

Now, here’s a fascinating tidbit: Clearing up your digital life can boost your productivity by a staggering 1.5 times! This is one of the best reasons why we created the Digital Declutter Experience. But let’s dive in and see how we can tackle five simple things today to clear up some digital clutter. 

1. The first and probably the easiest thing you can do is to close out all your open apps and tabs. Just checking my phone. I have 27 tabs open! Yikes! That’s mom and entrepreneur life for you. Next, the open apps, which I had 20 of! (I’m not proud of that.) Not only is closing all your open apps and tabs great for decluttering, but it’s great for your battery life! It is also a quick and easy thing you can do every single day before bed to declutter some space.

2. Now, if you have 100 (or more) unopened emails, then this could take a little bit longer. Start by going through and selecting all the ones that are junk and deleting them. Want to go a step further? Unsubscribe from all those pesky junk emails so you don’t have to deal with them anymore! After you’ve gotten rid of all of the junk, then it’s time to actually go through and read (and respond) to your unanswered emails. 
   PRO TIP- If going through your emails is a constant challenge with your business, you might consider restructuring your inbox by utilizing tags and a filtering system.  

3. The third simple task you can do is to organize your files into clearly labeled folders. I promise this task will really make you feel accomplished and organized. You can do this on your phone as well and organize all of your apps and photos. I like to pair similar apps together on my iPhone. For example, I have all my social apps in one folder and my banking in another. It makes my phone look clean and organized, and I get to see my background photo so much more clearly! 

4. I am guilty of being a sentimental hoarder and tend to keep old photos and texts because who knows when I may need them. I do have my days where I go through and select old or unnecessary photos and delete them. I also like to go through old files that I no longer need and get rid of them. Not only does this make things clean and organized, but it will free up some space on your phone or computer. 

5. Do you have apps on your phone that you haven’t used in months? I know until recently, I still had some old apps on my phone that I hadn’t used in almost a year with no plans on using them in the future either. Not only do apps take up space on your phone, but apps can also have access to user-sensitive data. Most digital clutter tends to happen on our smartphones since we carry them around with us the most. Our smartphones carry a lot of important information, so it’s important to get rid of any unnecessary apps and data and digitally declutter your life.
